7/18/08 - Minor League Recaps; Knights win, Brandon Allen stays hot, and Great Falls gets crushed

CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS
The Knights beat the Louisville Bats Friday, 5-3 in Lousiville, KY. Royce Huffman and Cole Armstrong each had a nice game at the plate, both collecting a pair of hits in 4 at bats and each collecting 2 RBIs. Both of Huffman's hits were doubles, and the Knights scored 3 runs in the 8th inning for the winner. Trailing 3-2, the Knights loaded the bases against Louisville, and scored on a 2-RBI single by Armstrong and RBI double by Huffman. Cole Armstrong has been on fire since being called up to AAA. In 12 games with Charlotte, Armstrong is batting .511 with 6 doubles and no homers.

Wes Whisler pitched well in the start, allowing only a run on 5 hits in 5 innings, but did not factor in the decision. The win went to recently demoted DJ Carrasco, even though he entered the game with Charlotte leading 2-1. Carrasco allowed the Bats to tie the game in the 7th by allowing a run, and then allowed another run in the 8th. International League All-Star Josh Childers pitched 1.2 innings for the save, allowing 1 hit and stiking out 3.

The win moved Charlotte to 48-52 on the season. They are in 2nd place in the IL Southern Division and are 5 games behind Durham. The Knights and Bats play tomorrow in Louisville at 6:15 Eastern time.

Brandon Allen continued his great start to his Baron career. GREAT FALLS VOYAGERS
It
was an ugly game at Centene Stadium Friday, as the Voyagers were clubbed by the Orem Owlz, 10-0. The loss went to Kevin Skogley, though he pitched better than his line indicates. Though the first six innings, Orem only lead 3-0, but Skogley fell apart in the 7th, failing to retire a batter he allowed 3 singles, threw a wild pitch, and was replaced by Stephen Sauer who allowed both runners he inherited from Skogley to score. Drew O'Neil and Matt Wickswat were both ineffective, as well. Offensively, the Voyagers were held to only 2 hits, a double by Nicholas Damas and a single by Kyle Shelton.

Great Falls is 16-14, 3 games behind Billings in the Northern Division of the Pioneer League. They open a 4-game series with the Ogden Raptors tomorrow night in Great Falls.
